Determinants of Preeclampsia in a Tertiary Hospital in South East Nigeria

Background: Preeclampsia is a pregnancy-related disorder. Symptoms commonly associated with it include elevated blood pressure, protein in the urine and leg swelling. It one of leading causes maternal fetal morbidity mortality especially limited resource settings. This study was aimed at determining risk factors for preeclampsia tertiary hospital south east Nigeria. Methods: retrospective case-control carried out Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University teaching Awka, There were 50 cases 100 controls. Data retrieved from case notes both Tables used to illustrate descriptive statistics comparing Categorical variables compared using Chi-square test. To ascertain determinants preeclampsia, Univariate multivariate logistic regression analyses conducted. Results: Maternal age less than 30 years, lower educational status, primigravida, previous history pregnancy induced hypertension, polyhydramnios, obesity, chronic diabetes, family predictive (Adjusted odds ratio (AOR) = 2.50, 9.08, 20.25, 76.47, 5.11, 7.53, 2.73, 10.78, 3.57 respectively). Conclusions: The identified this among others should serve as basis screening antenatal clinic attendees preeclampsia. will identify pregnant women, enhance early diagnosis intervention improve feto-maternal outcomes.
